JOAN AIKEN (1924-2004) was the author of many books for children and adults includingThe Wolves of Willoughby Chase andBlack Hearts in Battersea . Her 1968 novel,The Whispering Mountain , won the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Award. She was named a Member of the Order of the British Empire for her services to children's literature.
