Overview
This catalog documents and augments the first museum survey of work by German artist Monika Baer (b. 1964) in the United States. On view at the Art Institute of Chicago from October 24 2013-January 26, 2014 and at the Williams College Museum of Art from March 1 to May 18, 2013, the exhibition brought together over 50 paintings and drawings created between 1990 and 2013. Monika Baer was born in Cairo and grew up in Vienna and Bavaria and currently lives and works in Berlin. She studied painting at the Dusseldorf Art Academy from 1985 to 1992--a time when the Conceptualism of the 70s had given way to photography as the primary medium of emphasis and little existed in the way of viable models for the young painter. Baer's work demonstrates the continued tension generated by the commitment to paint while also refusing to embrace the existing conventions of what painting should be. Her drawings share many of the same themes and elements that comprise her paintings, but are born of very different impulses. They do not serve a preparatory function, nor are they entirely separate entities. Rather, Baer's drawings act as a kind of connective tissue among series of paintings. Her drawings and collages are not burdened with the weight of history with which painting must contend. In Baer's singular practice, drawings and paintings both evoke desires and afflictions, while the paintings, in particular, embody the pleasurable conflict of their making.Monika Baer includes installation photography of both exhibition venues. Full color individual plates of the works featured in the exhibition are contextualized with additional images of works from their respective series. Also included are reproductions of several new works yet to be published or exhibited. The catalogue includes a full exhibition checklist, a selected biography and bibliography, as well as texts, The Breast, by art historian and critic Alex Kitnick, and Openings by exhibition curator Lisa Dorin.
