He is best known for his works Moby Dick and Typee. During his lifetime he was considered a failure, but after his death his worth as a writer was recognized. In Moby Dick the sailor Ishmael tells the story of Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of a great white sperm whale. The novel is an allegory of human potential and man's limitations. Themes in the book include obsession, religion, idealism versus pragmatism, revenge, racism and politics.
