S Lord Harlaxton came from the garden, out of the broad sun, he was surprised to find Stephen there; for he had come to the only sequestered part of the grounds to read the papers obtained from Gentleman Jack. 'Well, you have got back?' he said, to Stephen, as he recovered from his momentary embarrassment, and held out his hand. 'Glad to see you.' 'And I you, ' said Stephen, taking the proffered hand after a brief hesitation. 'But dismissing to a more convenient time all matters that can wait, I wish to say a few words on my own position, and your relations with Miss Vandeleur.' 'Stay ' cried Lord Harlaxton. 'As to your position I am most ready to listen, and respond in an amicable spirit to anything reasonable; but as to the young lady who is presently to be my wife, I prefer to discuss our relations only with her.' 'No, Philip, that cannot be, ' said Stephen, with an air of stern decision. 'You will talk them over with me, and now, unless you prefer a discussion on a different theme, which will certainly be now.' 'Really ' replied Lord Harlaxton, in a tone of irony. 'Do things go with so high a hand? Is it this packet of papers, which I was about to read, that--' 'I see, then, you do understand the nature of what I was about to say on my own part, ' said Stephen. 'Are you sure you understand it yourself?' retorted the earl, growing more and more angry. 'Try me ' responded Stephen. 'But pray be careful. I did wish--I do still wish--that we should take counsel together in a friendly spirit.' 'I respond to that, ' said Lord Harlaxton, 'but request that the name of my bride may not again be mentioned.'
