Overview

The story of a quest for freedom and of the pain of saying goodbye Olivia, the daughter of a Massachusetts ship captain, wonders why her friend Mingo observes the receding tide day after day. Mingo, a family slave, tells Olivia that he watches for an opportunity to walk to an outcropping of rocks normally inaccessible by foot, since her family has promised to set him free if this unlikely event should occur. Olivia pledges eagerly to help track the tides, but realizes that if Mingo achieves his freedom, she will lose his companionship. Illustrated with lush oil paintings, this unusual story of slavery in 18th century New England carefully deals with the conflicted emotions of a young girl introduced to the pain of slavery.
