Overview
Patsy Washington has always lived under the iron fist of her wealthy father. Now pregnant by a fiance of her father's choosing, Patsy would flee her father and her fiance, but concern for her invalid mother keeps her close to home. Patsy's father chooses a new fiance for her, a less affluent young man Patsy had previously dated. The reluctant young man is forced into marrying Patsy by her father's threats of blackmail. Patsy and her husband, Austin Treadwell, move to Washington, D.C. so Austin can attend law school while Patsy's pregnancy is completed. Austin and Patsy tolerate each other as partners in a loveless marriage and try to gain financial independence away from Patsy's father. Patsy earns money as a music teacher; Austin takes part-time jobs. They purposely avoid seeing each other. When Patsy miscarries and her former fiance tries to reclaim her, she and Austin are forced to evaluate their marriage and their relationship. In love with each other, but concealing their true feelings, Austin and Patsy try to get Patsy's father to admit his role in forcing Austin to marry Patsy. Patsy's father denies any involvement in Patsy's choices until his usually docile wife helps Patsy discover the truth.
