Overview

Mein Kampf by Adolf Hitler.Mein Kampf which translates as my struggle was written By Adolf Hitler the infamous leader of the Nazi Party in 1925 during his time in prison. He originally wanted to call it "ViereinhalbJahre(des Kampfs) gegen luge, dummheit und feigheit" which means four and a half years( of struggle) against lies, stupidity and cowardice, however on reflection this was decided against due to the length of it and so Mein Kampf was chosenHe had it edited by his Deputy Rudolph Hess, before being published in two volumes in 1925 and 1926 respectively. The autobiographical book was were he outline his politicalideals and future plans for Germany as well as describing the process of antisemitism in the Nazi Party. Following the failed Munich Putsch in Germany in November 1923, Hitler was imprisoned for 'political crimes' where he almost constantly devoted himself to the book. The book has also been studied as a work of political theory due to his discussion on the evil of communism. The main disquisition of Hitler's autobiographical work is the "Jewish peril" which postulates a conspiracy by the jews of Europe to gain leadership of the world. Through the narrative of the work, the reader can follow Hitler's antisemitic journey. Interestingly Hitler had never met a jew until he moved to Vienna and at this point he was tolerant, and even dismissed antisemitism. However later he embraced the antisemitic views and they became pivotal to his ideal of a reformed nationalist Germany. He blames Germany's chief problems on the Weimar Republic (the parliament in the years after World War 1 and before World War 2), the Jews, the Social Democrat. He believed the parliament and Government were and plotting with the Jews and, therefore, wanted them destroyed completely. In fact, readers will notice that a lot of the racial laws that Hitler and the Nazi party finally came to enforce are ideals that were originally written in Mein Kampf. He also alludes to the treatment of the mentally ill and disabled members of German society that his racially driven laws would soon come to enforce. He states in the book that destruction of the sick and weak is more humane than protecting them. he also believed they should be destroyed in order to make room for the strong and pure.Hitler's book became one of the most popular books of the 1930's, making him a lot of money, however, he started to detach himself from the book when he became chancellor of Germany in 1933, disregarding the work as nothing but " fantasies behind bars", despite this it remained a bestseller and was given free to every soldier on the front line and every newlywed couple in Germany.Intrinsically the literary work outlays the socio-political plan established by the Nazi party, identifying the Jews and "Bolsheviks" as racially and conceptually inferior, whereas the "Aryans" were superior in every way from racially to politically. These political ideas involved the forcible removal and extinction of all German and European Jews amongst other groups. Hitler had the desire to return the German Homelands back into the great historical lands they used to be.Due to the anti Semitic contents of the book and the historical effects of the Nazi Party during World War Two and the Holocaust, Mein Kampf is 'an extremely controversial piece of literature, with some of its critics ironically guilty of huge atrocities themselves such as Nazi Ally and Italian fascist Dictator Benito Moussilini who believe that Hitler's thoughts were nothing more than "commonplace clichés". Others believed that it was just a work that was full of Hitler criticising and judged other members of his Party and personal friends.
