To his companions he was much the same Easy and free, but somewhat dull and tame. No project of adventure came from him, And none was ever spoiled by Tony's whim. When others had assented, he agreed, Nor last to follow, nor the first to lead. His master said, that Tony's parts were small; His comrades, Tony had no heart at all. Both were mistaken: for his parts were good, And he could ply them strongly if he would. And 'neath that careless indolence there lay A heart whose throb could bring them into play, Soon as the destined object made it feel, And touched the springs to move each sluggish wheel. In summer's noon, when dies the exhausted gale, How loose and languid hangs the flapping sail Heavy and dull, the barque appears to sleep On the still bosom of the slumbering deep. But when the eve has freshened life restored, How stretched the canvass, and how tight the cord Then the sharp keel cuts briskly thro' the seas, And all in gallant trim, she scuds before the breeze. The destined object came which Fate designed To break the torpid sleep of Tony's mind. It came, ah who Love's influence can escape ? It came, presented in a female shape.
