Mary Seacole (1805-1881) was born in Kingston, Jamaica. She learned about the healing powers of plants from her African mother and devoted her life to caring for the sick. She became famous during the Crimean War when she nursed wounded soldiers. She was one of the first true nurses in Victorian Britain.
