Overview

Abbe Prevost (1697-1763) was a French author. He studied with the Jesuits and in 1716 he left the Jesuits to join the army, but soon tired of military life, and returned to Paris in 1719. In 1726 he became a priest. Manon Lescaut (L'Histoire du chevalier des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut) is a short novel about a young man who leaves his family and country for the love of a beautiful but corrupt young girl. It is the seventh and final volume of Mmoires et aventures d'un homme de qualit (Memoirs and Adventures of a Man of Quality). It was controversial in its time and was banned in France upon publication. Even though banned or perhaps because it was banned it became quite popular through many pirated copies.
