Overview

Twelve-year-old Emily has lived through the Titanic disaster only to be haunted by memories of those who did not survive. Her correspondence with Albert, her friend from the Titanic, helps her come to terms with the changes in her life and develops their mutual interest in protecting the poor. Looking for a way to protect those vulnerable to exploitation, Emily makes friends with a fourteen-year-old garment worker who is active in her union. Emily's involvement in the labor struggle brings trouble when she risks her life at a violent demonstration. Finally, Emily is reunited with Albert at his grandmother's farm near Washington, D.C.
