It is true that the minister will be sure to have some unreasonable parishioners. So the lawyer will have some unreasonable clients, the doctor some unreasonable patients, the merchant some unreasonable customers, and the farmer some weather that will seem to him very unreasonable. And the minister will not always be reasonable himself. But, making full allowance for all hindrances and drawbacks, the life of the ministry, rightly taken, is a very joyous one. The minister who does not find it so had better look at home for the fault before looking anywhere else. This life is closed to you. What then? There is no time to waste in self-pity. There are other doors of Christian service open to you. The same mail which brought me your letter brought me one from a layman whose daily life is very arduous, who lives in a small village and is a member of an inconspicuous church. One sentence of his letter would be worth printing on every church calendar and framed and hung up in every parish house: The World Has Seen What God And Martin Luther Have Done, What God And John Calvin Have Done, What God And John Wesley Have Done, ...
