The book contains many practice exercises that help the student learn each skill by actually using it. Skills mastered early in the book are reviewed and constantly used in later exercises. Learning by activity, not passive absorption, is the goal. The parts of speech are studied separately to show how they help build ideas into sentences. This early section of the book is followed by the chapters on mechanical skills. These chapters are presented in order of difficulty or logic (for example, students frequently confuse plurals and possessives, so these two chapters are presented in sequence). The last three chapters, Outlines, Letters, and E-mails are not grammatical in nature, but are helpful, and students find them interesting. The final page of each chapter is titled "Check Your Understanding" and may be used as a test.
