Overview
The mountainous kingdom of Lesotho, a small landlocked territory entirely surrounded by South Africa, was established by Moshoeshoe, the first monarch of the country, during a period of great turbulence in southern Africa in the early nineteenth century. It was subsequently administered by the British, when it was known as Basutoland, until 1966 when it received full independence. This volume covers all aspects of Lesotho's history, politics, economy, social conditions and culture. Individual chapters are also devoted to the position of women in the country, literature and publishing history, and the kingdom's political and economic relationship with South Africa.
