Overview

Frank Chopin is not a typical secret agent. Officially an entomologist specialising in the observation of flies, he is also a 'sleeper for French Intelligence, occasionally reactivated. He has also just fallen for the evasive Suzy Clair whose husband vanished six years ago. These various strands come together when Chopin is asked to eavesdrop on a high-ranking Russian apparatchik at a hotel outside Paris. There he runs into Suzy, along with a host of other sub-agents in disguise. The reader is drawn into a world of espionage and counter-espionage set between suburban Paris and the exclusive Hotel du Lac. And the bugs are real, too. A couple of flies are fitted up with mini-microphones, to hover, record, transmit and, as it turns out, die at the most inopportune moments. What Chopin discovers is at the heart of a book that is both thriller and witty, accomplished parody of the genre.
