The rationale behind the writing of La Passerelle is a conviction that there is a real need for a book (and cassette) that does not separate grammar from communication, a book that deals with French grammar in use. Clear and succinct grammar explanations are supported by examples of grammar-in-use in printed materials (including cartoons) and in recorded interviews on cassette. Explanation is followed by exercises. These move from being very structured to being more open-ended to allow students the opportunity for self-expression. The grammar presentation is in French - this is because the authors think it preferable for classes to be conducted in the target language.
