Overview
John Burroughs (1837 - 1921) was an American naturalist important to the Conservation movement. He like Thoreau wrote essays on nature. Burroughs was the "Grand Old Man of Nature" when the American romance with nature, and the American conservation movement, had come fully into their own. He grew up on a farm in New York and at age 17 became a teacher. Burroughs wrote over 30 books and published hundreds of essays. John James Audubon was a 19th century French-American ornithologist, naturalist, hunter, and painter. Biography/Scientists. Audubon owned a General Store in Kentucky and went on expeditions with some of the Indians in the area. He is best known for his study and paintings of birds. After a short stay in Cincinnati to work as a naturalist and taxidermist at a museum, Audubon with his gun, paintbox, and assistant Joseph Mason, traveled south on the Mississippi. He had made a personal commitment to find and paint all the birds of North America for eventual publication.
