Overview

Set in a run-down firm of mini-cab drivers in Pittsburgh's Hill District in 1977, Jitney is part of August Wilson's Century Cycle, his epic dramatisation of the African American experience in the twentieth century.

Jitney was first produced at the Allegheny Repertory Theatre, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1982. It was later revised by August Wilson, and opened Off-Broadway in 2000. It was performed at the National Theatre, London, in 2001, winning the Olivier Award for Best New Play. Its Broadway premiere came in 2017.

This hardback edition includes a foreword by Ishmael Reed.

'Wilson's greatest triumph is the creation of his characters. His characters are complex and human. He captures the small talk as well as the philosophical musings and poetry that go on whenever black men gather' Ishmael Reed, from his Foreword
