Overview
The Committee announced on 20 June 2000 that it would be inquiring into the role and policy of the FCO in relation to Iran. It was decided to undertake this inquiry because of the strategic importance of Iran and encouraging evidence of a change in attitude in Tehran towards this country, and emergence of more pragmatic policies generally. As the likelihood of a General Election would make it impossible to do justice to the important subject of British/Iranian relations, a short explanatory report together with the written evidence received has been published. If the election does not take place until the autumn the Committee will undertake a proper Iran inquiry, if the election does take place as expected the Committee hopes its successors will consider seriously the desirability of an inquiry.
