Overview
Robert Chambers was an American artist and writer. After being a successful artist Chambers began writing. He first wrote bizarre fiction short stories. His later works were romantic fiction many of which were serialized in magazines. By 1924 his writing consisted solely of historical fiction. This story begins just before World War II. Only one man in America knows a special secret. The novel progresses through the intelligence surrounding this secret. The story opens with the sentence ?The case in question concerned a letter in a yellow envelope, which was dumped along with other incoming mail upon one of the many long tables where hundreds of women and scores of men sat opening and reading thousands of letters for the Bureau of P. C.-whatever that may mean.' What is in this yellow envelope and what does it have to do with the man and a great secret?
