Overview

How China Became Capitalist details the extraordinary, and often accidental, journey that China has taken over the past thirty years in transforming itself from a closed, agrarian, socialist economy to an indomitable force in the international arena.

The authors persuasively argue, through the use of historic events, that the reforms implemented by the Chinese leaders following the death of Mao did not represent a concerted attempt to create a capitalist economy. The Chinese leaders looked to Western economies to learn methods to improve their socialist system, which they always believed to be superior to the capitalist models that they were learning from. However, the various reforms added up to a fundamental change to their system, an accidental path to capitalism.

How China Became Capitalist also demonstrates the return of pragmatism to Chinese economics and politics, following Mao's death. Most interestingly, the book argues that the approach of 'seeking truth from fact' is much more in line with Chinese culture which has valued pragmatism since the time of Confucius.
