Overview

"Heroes' Tunnel" follows the speaker as he comes of age in a broken American landscape complete with high school football heroics, hard labor, the resentment of first love, and the ties of friendship that bind forever. Each poem is a moment in time and time in the collection is linear. These moments are pinpointed because they are in my opinion the most vital to the speaker's coming of age and coming to terms with the idea that the "characters" in his narrative are perfectly human. They are imperfect and not meant to serve his narrative. Nor is he meant to serve the narratives of Frankie or Charlene, the secondary characters. While the reader's experience is through one streamlined vantage, it is my hope that he or she leaves the collection feeling the speaker's concession that adolescence, maturation, and existence in general is disjointed for the human. The circumstances of our lives and the lives that we walk in and out of or that walk in and out of our own are either wholly coincidental or a part of a larger plan that we are too small and unimportant to conceptualize.
