Not illustrated. 1907 edition. Excerpt: ...Beowulf acted as the guardian of Heardred, his son. This relation does not occur in the ballad or the Gest. Beowulf was sister's son to Hygelac, and, after Heardred's death, succeeded him. Of the daughters and fathers, only the relation of Hildeburh and Hoc is significant in action. He was slain, --like many a ballad father, --in the attempt to prevent Finn's Brautfahrt.
