How often does charity serve as a cloak for covetousness We must not neglect what is due to Christ under pretence of what we owe his members. Men count every thing wasted which is expended in the external worship of God, when they love neither God nor his worship. Jesus Christ authorizes external worship, by accepting it at the very instant in which he was going to establish religion by a worship the most spiritual and internal. 10. "When Jesus understood it, he said unto them, Why trouble ye the woman? for she hath wrought a good work upon me. It is then a good work to pay an external worship to God and Christ, and that sometimes even with lustre and expense. The church, calumniated on this account by the followers of the perfidious Judas, or by the imitators of these imperfect disciples, will still have Jesus Christ for her advocate. Nothing which is produced by charity can be evil in the sight of God. A waste of our gold and silver is of no moment in his account, when they are not wasted on our lusts; but it is a matter of great moment to grieve our neighbour, by discouraging his charity, out of temporal interest. 11. For ye have the poor always with you; but me ye have not always. Christ substitutes the poor in his stead, that he may be relieved in them.
