Overview

Wharton (1862-1937) was an American novelist, short story writer, travel writer, playwright and designer who drew upon her insider's knowledge of upper class New York society to realistically portray the lives and morals of the Gilded Age. She was the first woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1921 for her novel The Age of Innocence. She was in France when World War I broke out and for four years was a tireless and ardent supporter of the French war effort, helping to set up American hostels in Paris for Belgian refugees. This collection of her observations on the French written during the war years was first published in 1919.
