Overview

The Wonderful World of Animals series focuses on the common characteristics of the major animal families. Its goal is to give children a broader understanding of similarities between animals that seem very different from each other at first glance, such as horses and cats. Basic concepts in biology and physiology are presented to help children recognize similar traits and features of animals of the same family. This excellent series is a complement to the more typical wildlife series whose volumes focus on single animals.

All fish live in the water. Most breathe through gills and have scales and fins. Scientists divide fish into three groups: jawless fish, cartilaginous fish, and bony fish. Children will be impressed by the tremendous differences between fish in each group. They will be more surprised to learn that some sea animals that look like fish are actually mammals!
