Overview

In January of 1946, Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, John Pesky, and Bobby Doerr are released from the military and vow to come back as good as ever. American and especially Boston, want real baseball again. In 1945, with Williams and the team back home, the Red Sox play in front of a crowd of more than 33,000 in their last scrimmage game at Fenway Park before the season starts. Opening Day for the league is in Washington, DC, between the Senators and the Red Sox. President Harry Truman throws out the first pitch. Ted Williams goes 6-12 in the series and is mobbed by Senators fans who rip off his shirt as he leaves the field. Near the dugout, Williams tosses his hat to a GI sitting in the lower box. Opening Day for the Red Sox at Fenway Park is an event for the ages. Before the game, Marines reenact the flag-raising at Iwo Jima in center field. The first pitch is thrown out by Governor Tobin, Standing by his side is a local war hero, John Murdoch, who gets an even bigger ovation than Ted Williams. Book jacket.
