Overview

Fathers and Sons is a classic novel by Ivan Turgenev that tells the story of generational conflict and the power of love. The novel follows the life of Arkady, a young man who returns home after completing his studies in St. Petersburg and brings with him a new and revolutionary ideology. He is forced to confront the values that his father and his peers hold dear, and must decide whether to accept them or to challenge them. The novel explores the clash between the traditional values of the older generation and the radical new ideas of the younger generation, and how they ultimately learn to come together. With its timeless themes and powerful characters, Fathers and Sons is a must-read for anyone interested in Russian literature. This edition is based on the 1917 translation by Constance Garnett (1861-1946), originally titled Fathers & Children.

Ivan Turgenev (1818-1883) was a Russian novelist, poet, and playwright who is considered one of the greatest writers of the 19th century. He was born in Oryol, Russia, to a wealthy family and was educated by tutors at home before attending a grammar school in Moscow. Turgenev wrote his first works in the 1840s, including a number of plays, poems, and stories. His first novel, Rudin, was published in 1856 and was an immediate success. Turgenev's work is known for its realism and psychological insight, and his characters are often seen as representing a variety of social classes in 19th century Russia. His most famous works include Fathers and Sons, A Nest of Gentlefolk, and On the Eve. He was also active in politics and was a close friend of Tsar Alexander II, who granted him a large estate in Russia. Turgenev's works were translated into many languages and are still widely read today. He was a major influence on the development of the Russian literary tradition, and many modern writers, such as Leo Tolstoy, have cited him as an influence. Turgenev also wrote several essays on politics, literature, and culture. He died in Baden-Baden, Germany, in 1883, and is buried in the cemetery of the Russian Orthodox Church in St. Petersburg.
