THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY STATED. EIGHTH LORD'S DAY. THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY STATED. TT AVING in our last discourse enforced the funda- L mental trutlis, I. That there is a God; II. That there is only one God; we now come to the third division of our subject, which embraces the all-important doctrine of the Trinity. III. There are three distinct Persons, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, in the one true and only God. In the proper places, as we proceed with our exposition of the Catechism, we shall show out of Scripture, that the Father is God (Ninth Lord's Day); that the Son is God (Thirteenth Lord's Day); that the Holy Ghost is God (Twentieth Lord's Day); from which, since it has been demonstrated that there is only one God, it must follow irresistibly that thtse three, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, coexist or subsist in the one God and as one God. Now, however, our aim, as required by the part of the Catechism under consideration, is to show what we mean by this subsistence of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost in One God; and this, not only for the confirmation of our faith, but also for the vindication of the doctrine from the false charges which ignorance or malice have brought against it. Let no one turn away from this discussion, as though the doctrine were a mere technical mysticism, having no important bearing upon Christian belief, sentiment, or practice.
