Overview
Evangeline is a narrative poem written by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and published in 1847. The poem tells the story of Evangeline Bellefontaine, a young Acadian woman who is separated from her love, Gabriel Lajeunesse, during the forced deportation of the Acadian people by the British in 1755. Evangeline spends years searching for Gabriel, traveling from village to village and encountering other exiled Acadians along the way. Despite her efforts, she never finds Gabriel, who has become a successful farmer in Louisiana. Eventually, Evangeline settles in a convent in Philadelphia, where she spends the rest of her life caring for the sick and dying. The poem is known for its romanticism, its depiction of the Acadian people, and its themes of loss, perseverance, and faith. It has been adapted into several films, operas, and musicals, and remains one of Longfellow's most popular works. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
