Overview
As critics have recognised that the concerns of Shelley's poetic career were dominantly political, a large body of his work has become anomalous. In this study, Timothy Clark reconciles the peculiarly weak figure of the poet who first appears in 'Alastor' (1815) with Shelley's immersion in the issues of reform and revolution, and demonstrates that, far from being either a visionary or an ironically distanced 'persona', this figure represents an ambivalent 'idealism' - a fictional embodiment of the social forces which were tearing Europe apart in the Romantic age.
