Overview

After Edward Gibbon's death in 1794, it was left to his friend Lord Sheffield to prepare for publication his Memoirs of My Life and Writings. Gibbon's work was largely incomplete, and the editors argue here that Sheffield created a work of enduring value from the great historian's drafts, journals, and letters. Their detailed notes add value to Sheffield's original text, increase our understanding of Gibbon's personal and intellectual life, and help to place him in his domestic, intellectual, and political context.
