Overview
After serving as the supreme commander of Allied forces in World War II, Dwight D. Eisenhower served two terms as president, guiding the United States through its Cold War with the Soviet Union. Under the Eisenhower Doctrine, the United States worked to "contain" communism by providing military and economic aid to anticommunist nations. Eisenhower also shaped U.S. policy on the nuclear arms race and the spread of communism in Vietnam. In addition to these foreign policy issues, this anthology examines Eisenhower's decision not to speak out against Senator Joseph McCarthy, who claimed that Communists had infiltrated the federal government, and the president's decision to dispatch troops to Little Rock, Arkansas, to enforce the Supreme Court's ruling that schools must be racially integrated.
