This innovative new study evaluates debates about modern cultures, both within and outside of human geography. Its purpose is to demonstrate the centrality of geographical concerns of areal differentiation and integration in contemporary considerations of the cultural. Philip Crang sets out a three-fold geographical framework. Firstly, he argues that the cultural is 'local', developed in particular contexts; secondly, that in the modern world these cultural contexts are increasingly integrated by flows of people, ideas and artefacts through time and space; andthirdly, that these flows produce cultural 'encounters' in different contexts to those in which they originated. Displacement brings together previously separate debates, mutually informing them all.
