Overview
When Sir Thomas Capley inherits a fortune from his great-uncle Silas, he returns to Wintham determined to restore the family seat to its former glory. In somewhat unusual circumstances, he meets the proud and beautiful heiress, Miss Helena Steer. She, however, has decided never to marry and, instead, devotes herself widowed father, Reverend Francis Steer, and her two young sisters. Her brother Richard is deeply in debt to an evil moneylender, Percy Davenport, who threatens them both. Helena is fiercely independent and finds Sir Thomas Capley's arrogant and determined advances very challenging. However, aided by Thomas's mischievous grandmother, the couple fall in love. There are many dangerous adventures for both of them but will Helena find happiness with the passionate Sir Thomas?
