Overview
In the span of three decades-1870 to 1900-more than twelve million Eastern European emigrants made the formidable journey to America, including one-hundred thousand Volga Deutsch-ethnic Germans from Russia-among them John and Maria Schmidt.Their pathway to America begins a century before when their forebears escape the war-ravaged Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel in modern day Germany. They answer the call of Catherine the Great who believes the Germans possess the skills to settle the unforgiving Russian Steppe. The colonists succeed in their endeavor, but Catherine's grandson-Alexander II-becomes increasingly suspicious of Volga Deutsch autonomy.
