When Adelinde became old enough to prattle to him with any mixture of reason, his growing affection for her made him start sometimes at the flashes of new light, that burst for a moment on his ideas, and penetrated Jo the depths of his heart. He began to glance with so- melhing more of interest on the few books, he had brought with him: consisting principally of Travels, or contemporary Memoirs, rarely of the best cast.
