Overview

Although Hank Harrison is normally associated with non-fiction, this, his first novel, is nothing short of amazing. Harrison's fiction style is half way between the academia of John Dos Pasos & the underworld of Nelson Algren. Set roughly fifty years in the future, the hero, Canyon Collins, the son of two wandering hippies, manages to save the planet from a satellite launched by secret society made up of Silicon Valley nerds. Collins meets & weds a brilliant woman scientist named Anna who actually saves the planet, but the arch druid of Stonehenge takes credit for it. This doesn't matter because along the way the two also discover the secret to immortality & the real story behind the Shroud of Turino. Oh! did I mention the police riots at Stonehenge. COMPUTER SMUT is a labyrinth throughout which Canyon is followed by sinister forces over which he & Anna eventually triumph. In the process Canyon is dosed on a mind bending chemical which sends him back to the Elizabethan period where we discover who really wrote the plays attributed to Shakespeare. Harrison's vision of the next 50 years hinges on the assumption that nothing is going to change much. In the Harrisonian vision, Victorian houses still stand intact, cars hardly run, the economy is borderline, ennui & angst are everywhere & yet, the narrator is a happy kind of jerk. Harrison has a disturbed mind making this one of the funniest & most convoluted books you will ever read. COMPUTER SMUT has violence, snakebite, famine, romance, sex, heroics & a happy ending. Sci-fi readers will get a kick out of the futurism in COMPUTER SMUT, but this is true literature - in the vein of Tom Robbins or Vonnegut - & can not easily be classified as Sci-fi.
