Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III THE SENTENCE Since the sentence is an important unit of expression, both in written and in oral composition, we must, if we are to write and speak correctly and effectively, understand the grammatical and rhetorical principles underlying good sentence structure. Grammar deals mainly with the relations which words, phrases, and clauses should bear to one another in sentences; thus it gives us the principles underlying correct sentence structure. Rhetoric, which deals with the sentence as a part of a larger unit, ? the paragraph, ?strives to make the sentence express the writer's thought so exactly that the reader will get the precise thought which is in the writer's mind. Thus rhetoric gives us the principles underlying effective sentence structure. The sentence as a unit in grammar is partially understood. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss the sentence more fully in this aspect, and, in addition, to discuss its rhetorical classification.
