Overview

The third in the series, Close-Up 03 is a collection of three individual studies specialising in close readings of films and TV. This issue features pieces by Jonathan Bignell (University of Reading) on `The Police Series', which closely analyses the mise-en-sc'ne and visual style of TV programmes including Hill Street Blues, Miami Vice, NYPD Blue, Homicide: Life on the Street and CSI; Stella Bruzzi (University of Warwick) on `Men's Cinema', discussing how film style conveys and articulates notions of masculinity, analysing how mise-en-sc'ne, rather than spectacle alone, shapes a sense of the masculine in films such as Raging Bull (1980) and The Right Stuff (1983); and Iris Luppa (University of Reading) on `Weimar Cinema' examining three films of this influential era of filmmaking in Germany - Dr Mabuse, the Gambler (1922), People on Sunday (1929) and Kuhle Wampe (1932) - and the complex readings invited by these films.
