She lived near La Rue Marboeuf on the Champs-Elysees, but was rarely at home, or if such were the case by chance, she was generally lying down, which, however, did not prevent her small salons from being crowded. Her daughter Clorinda received in a sort of gallery which overlooked the avenue. For three months and more, Rougon had received with indifference the advances made by these ladies, whose acquaintance he had made at a ball given by a Foreign Minister. He met them everywhere. They greeted him with smiles. The mother never spoke, but the daughter talked very loud, and looked him straight in the eyes. He avoided them: refused their invitations, and pretended not to see them. But finally he decided to yield to a certain extent, and called upon them. At the Italian Legation these ladies were highly spoken of: Count Balbi had really existed; the Countess had connections of the highest respectability at Turin, and the daughter had been on the point, the previous year, of marrying a petty German prince. But when Rougon questioned the Duchess Sanquirino, a totally different face was put on the matter. There he heard that Clorinda was born, two years after the death of the Count, and also a series of complicated scandals in regard to the Balbi manage; of a divorce, and a half-way reconciliation. A youthful Attache of the embassy, perfectly au courant with what went on at the court of Victor Emanuel, was more explicit still. According to him, if the Countess retained any influence at the Italian court, it was due to an old acquaintance with a very exalted personage, and he even went so far as to say, that she could not remain at Turin, but ...
