Introduction.?There is no doubt that Greek history and Greek literature are very important for us to know, because there is hardly any people that ever lived upon the earth who worked so hard at politics, or who wrote so many excellent books and wrote them so well. These things are described in the Primers of Greek History and Literature which have been published in this series. But we cannot understand Greek history, or enjoy Greek books, without knowing something of the private life and ways of the people, their habits and customs, their business and their sports, their law and their religion.
