Overview
Set in the year 1793, this historical novel details the lives of Cash and Jack Tremain as they arrive in Sydney Cove from Cornwall to help their father build an empire. The brothers reveal their differing characters: Cash is daring and headstrong, a leader of men and lover of women, determined to make his fortune. Jack on the other hand is deeply-troubled and prone to sudden fits of violence. He moves out to Parramatta to farm his father's land but is haunted by his dreams. Cash finds his efforts bring him into conflict with the colony's most powerful and corrupt men. The plot follows their fortunes and failures, their triumphs and tragedies to its inevitable end.
