Happening to meet Captain Drummond in oneof his rides, he mentioned him at the Castle, and begged leave to introduce him. Drummond was accordingly introduced by Durnford at Marsden Castle, and met with a gracious reception. Lord Marsden had been told of the great antiquity of his family?Lady Gertrude of his aristocratic principles, reserved habits, and deep veneration for rank. At this period the young Eleanor, throwing off the garb of infancy, was permitted to appear in company; and here Drummond saw her, beautiful indeed, but silent, shy, and treated as a child. If any male visitor appeared to notice her, she was sent into the back ground either by her aunt or sisters. There, however, Drummond shortly found the way, and there she soon felt that it was no punishment to be sent.
