Overview
Called To Serve is an action filled historical novel centered on the role of a combat chaplain in Afghanistan working out of Kandahar Airfield. Here the protagonist is in contact with American, British and other Coalition padres who act in solidarity supporting each other while attending to the casualties of war. Dialogue deals with the care of the wounded in the Role 3 hospital setting; Ramp Ceremonies for those killed in action; visits to the soldiers in the fighting zones; attention given to compassionate situations and preparing personnel for their post deployment homecoming through the means of decompression counseling prior to repatriation. Woven into the story is the essential link with family and loved ones at home. During his tour leave period, he meets his wife in Rome for a marvelous holiday. It is here that she has insights into her husband's inner conflict where death and mass casualties have assaulted his gentle soul. Her background as a nurse helps to lift his disguised depression and with her love she gives him strength and courage to endure and face his demons.
