Overview

African art objects -- like the remarkable cultures of Africa -- are not static. Their dynamic designs and patterns, body paintings, art shapes and materials cannot be defined by their varied places or periods of origin. They have traveled and continue their trajectories, as they take on multiple meanings, according to needs. Here are stimulating ideas and art -- Uri (Nigeria) body painting and textile and embroidery patterns, masks of the Ode-lay society of Freetown, Sierra Leone, that include elements of Hinduism, Kongo pictorial designs now in Cuba, Nghe Society Emlem 20th century animal skulls, Cameroon, embroidered tablecloth designs of Mleanya Iheonybuokwu. Adams, Martiniz-Ruiz and Williams, graduate students, co-curated the show which is the basis of this catalogue and have contributed essays.
