Excerpt from book: A WARWICKSHIRE COTERIE Among the figures which cross the stage like dim, ghostly apparitions in Johnson's Lives of the Poets there are some here and there whose pleasant memories it would not be an unhappy task to revive. A few thin volumes preserve such of their lucubrations as themselves, or their friends, thought worthy of print; and the albums of eighteenth- century bluestockings or dilettante clergymen often contain some other odes or elegies which achieved no public fame. Among these memories it has often seemed to me that there is one coterie which deserves resurrection, and that with some touch, not too elaborate, of homage. The Warwickshire circle of the reign of George II. has some pleasant associations, and I should like nothing better than to search among the dwellings and the churches with which it was connected for some surviving memorials of its kindly and not ungraceful existence. It has left works in modest abundance, poems of different degrees of artificiality, and letters of a charm which seems to us to-day curiously old-world, quiet, and complacent. The names which are most naturally recalled are those of Shenstone and Jago, Somervile and Lady Luxborough, and Richard Graves. But there are others, whom the curious may discover among the letters of these constant correspondents, who might, perhaps, be traced with difficulty and prove to have some interest beyond that of the shadows which await on the glimmering lights we know. Among such are Outing, and Wheatley, and Lord Stamford, and Mr. Whistler, not to forget those two gentlemen, Mr. Nixon and Mr. Tracey, who wrote verses to Mr. Somervile on his poem The Chase Of Mr. Whistler, I like to rememberthat he dwelt in the southernmost part of Oxfordshire, in a very small box in the village where his mot...
