It is not often realised that the author of Pilgrim's Progress wrote a commentary on Genesis. As far as we know, Bunyan's incomplete Genesis commentary has not been separately published before - though it was published posthumously as part of a "Complete Works" collection in 1691. His first wife died young. Shortly after his second marriage, Bunyan was arrested and imprisoned for being an unauthorised preacher. He stayed in prison for many years, because he refused to give an undertaking not to preach the Gospel. It was in prison that the ideas for his allegories came to him, and he was able to publish them in the next few years following his eventual release.
