He had never known before all that freedom meant, because he had never before suffered imprisonment. It was hard to walk quietly through the streets to the station. He wanted to put his grand new power of liberty to fuller test. He would have liked to wander in green fields?and smell trees again; but the streets were deep with mud, and the fields, when he saw them from the train, were heavy brown mould, and the trees were naked skeletons swinging their black bones sadly in the winter wind. He stopped before shop windows and admired them as though he had never seen shop windows before. Besides the money due to him from the prison, the Governor had given him a sovereign. The feel of money was delightful to him again. Seeing a toy-shop he went in and bought a wooden horse and a cart with a tilt for Jackie. He hadnever enjoyed buying anything so much in his life before. He began to feel himself again. Newspapers he had had an occasional glance at in the Governor's office, so he knew generally how the world had been wagging in his absence. He bought one now for himself; and at the same place bought a briar pipe and some tobacco, and then turned into a small restaurant which offered the temptation of a smoking-room to its customers. He called for tea and toast, and smoked a pipe with much enjoyment while it was getting ready. He talked to the waitresses and to another man who came in.
