Overview
Joe Beddington is heir to an enormous fortune, but must kowtow to the whims of his mother. They are living a while in India, attempting to find the lost daughter of a friend of Mrs. Beddington. Joe falls in love with Rita, a girl who is a devotee in a secret temple. Like a spider, Mrs. Beddington weaves a complex web that will advance her goals but frustrate Joe's. This web draws in several others, including a local Maharajah, who delights in cruelty. But it is not Mrs. Beddington's web at all -- it is the unfolding of the wheel of karma. At the proper moment, the head of the temple calls on divine justice in a Hindu ritual called the black light, and each character must confront the consequences of his or her deeds.
